CAIRO — Amazon.eg recently launched a new storefront for thousands of Egyptian handicrafts and heritage products to support Egyptian products. The new marketplace showcases products from Egyptian partners, manufacturers and brands.
The new storefront was announced Oct. 10 during the Turathna exhibition for Egyptian heritage and handicrafts, organized by Egypt’s Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (MSMEDA). The launch was inaugurated by Egyptian Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouly.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Omar el-Sahy, general manager of Amazon Egypt, said that the new page promotes and endorses tens of thousands of local products from small- and medium-sized enterprises that are able to compete with foreign products.
He praised Amazon Egypt’s commitment to working continuously to contribute to the success of small- and medium-sized enterprises in Egypt since they are fundamental to Amazon Egypt’s ability to offer a broad selection, great prices and a convenient shopping experience for its customers.
Observers praised the importance of the freshly rolled-out storefront showcasing Egyptian products. This step will allow millions of customers to learn about handicrafts that express Egyptian heritage, thereby promoting sales, contributing to the success of the enterprises and generating job opportunities.
Investment and economic expert Mahmoud Atta told Al-Monitor, “The launch of a page for handicrafts and heritage products on Amazon Egypt platform promotes and markets the Egyptian product and benefits the owners of emerging and handicraft projects. This step contributes to reviving handicrafts, especially the production of pottery, ceramics, leather products, woodwork items, metal works, crochet, embroidery, clothing, furnishings, textiles, tools and household necessities.”
He noted that Amazon Egypt will not only allow small- and medium-sized enterprises to display their products on Amazon.eg but will also provide them with the needed training to develop and price-match their products to comply with local and global requirements, which will boost their competitiveness at local and international levels.
“Partnering with Amazon Egypt will allow establishing an integrated society for handicrafts and promote handicraft and heritage products manufactured by women and youths. It also helps to curb unemployment,” Atta added.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, MSMEDA CEO Nevin Gamea expressed her appreciation for the cooperation with Amazon Egypt. She explained that this step will expand the number of products offered and boost the exposure of small enterprises to help them keep pace with local and global standards.
She further praised Amazon Egypt as a pioneering e-commerce company for assisting owners of micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises in various productive sectors and helping them to continue and expand.
Gamea added, “The agency (MSMEDA) is constantly working to open new opportunities to help enterprises expand the marketing of their products. The agency is also interested in supporting traditional handicraft projects that reflect the Egyptian cultural heritage, with modern products that meet all customer tastes.”
