Suspected Israeli airstrikes killed a solider in northern Syria late Monday evening. The latest alleged Israeli attack came as Jordan hosted a meeting on reintegrating Syria into the Arab world.
Syria’s official news agency SANA reported that Israeli missiles struck the Aleppo international airport and other targets in the vicinity at around 11:35 p.m. local time. One "military personnel" was killed, while five others were injured, including two civilians. The strikes also damaged the airport and rendered it out of service.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the strikes targeted the Nairab military airport near Aleppo as well as defense factories near al-Safirah southeast of the city.
Background: The strikes followed another suspected Israeli air attack near Homs in central Syria on Saturday. SANA said those strikes damaged fuel tanks and trucks, while the Syrian Observatory said the assault destroyed an ammunition depot used by Lebanon’s Hezbollah.
Israel is regularly accused of striking Syrian, Iranian and Hezbollah military targets in Syria, though Israel rarely confirms this.
Know more: On Monday, Jordan hosted the foreign ministers of Syria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Iraq for a meeting on Syria’s readmission to the Arab League. Syria’s efforts to reintegrate into the region politically after years of isolation due to the civil war are rapidly gaining momentum. Following the meeting, the countries issued a statement calling for foreign military forces to leave Syria, among other things.
