Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur lost the women's tennis Wimbledon final on July 9.
Jabeur was defeated by Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina in three sets. The number three-ranked Tunisian won the first set, before losing the next two.
Jabeur was the first woman from the African continent to reach a grand slam tennis final, and her second-place finish at this year's Wimbledon is a career best for her.
“I’m a proud Tunisian woman standing here today,” Jabeur said following her victory in the semifinals. "I want to see more not just Tunisian, but African, Arab players on tour.”
Jabeur has been one of the top tennis players in the world for some time, and her success is growing the sport in North Africa. In May, the Women’s Tennis Association added a tournament in the Tunisian coastal city of Monastir. Many young Tunisians have been inspired to play tennis because of her, The National reported.
Jabeur's performance at Wimbledon has been heavily covered in the Tunisian and Arabic-language media. Qatar’s beIn Sports tweeted that she is “writing history” with the finals appearance.
